"Keep Lane in 12th"
Two years ago, the limestone layers under the storied bluegrass trembled when someone who makes a living off commercial real estate was elected to represent the Urban County Council's 12th District, which includes some of the world's best soils and most of rural Fayette County. Ed Lane has learned a lot since then about the economic importance of agriculture to Lexington and the challenges facing farmers. He has built decent relationships with rural interests that had opposed his election and feared what he would do on the council. Now, having someone like Lane, who's perceived as pro-business, in their corner is an asset to rural interests. Lane has had some missteps in his first term and shown a tendency to shoot off his mouth before all the facts are in. But he's also shown a willingness to learn, and his interest in the budget and revenue is helpful to the council. His opponent, Jamie Millard, a farm owner with an interesting and varied career in business and public service, would be an ardent advocate for preservation of Lexington's land and built history. But Lane is better suited to represent the district at this time. Originally conceived as the rural stronghold in the merged Urban County Government, District 12 has been transformed by development into a place where commuters and minivans far outnumber farmers and horse vans. Representing most districts involves a balancing act, but that is especially true in the 12th. Voters should keep Lane on that tight rope for another term. Councilman Ed Lane represents the 12 th District on Lexington Urban County Council. He is the owner of a commercial real estate services firm and publishes a statewide business magazine.
